Welcome to the first episode of Tom LoBianco Reports, a new show from 24sight News and our friends at
. Every day, Monday through Friday, tune in here on Substack at Noon ET for a chat (usually) about the most pressing issues and (occasionally) about some lighter fare.Talk is cheap and opinions aplenty, but the story only reveals itself through reporting.
So each weekday, I’ll bring you along as I report the story. Along with my friend and colleague
, we’ll dive down the late-night, screen-glazed rabbit hole of the modern interwebs, acting as your personal guide to what’s real and what’s complete bullshit. If you want to join live, you can tune in every day on Substack. If you miss me, then hop on over to The Political Voices Network for the evening replay. If you’ve got questions or comments, just reply to this email and I’ll see it.
Coming up on today’s show:
The Top: Trump 4ever?
In normal times, this topic would be the province of esteemed thought leaders in the vein of Alex Jones and L. Ron Hubbard. But these are not normal times.
The military is dispatched to cities around the nation, masked agents are grabbing people from the streets, history is being rewritten in some corners, political opponents targeted with criminal investigations, blue chip law firms and universities cowed into payments to the president.
So we’ll start with the supreme power of the land: The Constitution. Can a president serve a third term? What does the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution say?
The Nut Graf
Franklin Delano Roosevelt broke the historic tradition, established by George Washington. So, from 1947 - 1951, Congress and the states ratified the 22nd Amendment.
A legal mechanism: Two days after Trump’s second inauguration, a Tennessee Republican put in a bill to amend the Constitution to allow Trump to run again.
But what about not following the Constitution?
Hot Quote
The bluster is real, from vague, ambiguous comments like “you’ll never have to vote again” to official government trolling in the form of memes and merch.
But do the words carry weight?
Deep Background
The Founding Fathers had some prescient debate about presidential term limits and the threat of a de facto monarchy. (They did just fight the Revolutionary War to break free from monarchy.)
Their debates sound eerily familiar to the modern battle. (I will not be rapping this a la Lin-Manuel Miranda. But if you want to AI that, I ain’t stopping you.)
What’s Next
Join us Tuesday at Noon ET for Tom LoBianco Reports, Ep. 2: Occupy D.C., The Feds Take Over.
And look for additional installments in The Trump 4ever story, going deeper on mechanics and the what-ifs of a president who refuses to leave.
