Welcome to the fifth episode of Tom LoBianco Reports, a new show from 24sight News and our friends at
. Every day, Monday through Friday, tune in here on Substack at Noon ET for a chat (usually) about the most pressing issues and (occasionally) about some lighter fare.Talk is cheap and opinions aplenty, but the story only reveals itself through reporting.
Each weekday, I’ll bring you along as I report the story. Along with my friend and colleague
, we’ll dive down the late-night, screen-glazed rabbit hole of the modern interwebs, acting as your personal guide to what’s real and what’s complete bullshit. If you want to join live, you can tune in every day on Substack. If you miss me, then hop on over to The Political Voices Network for the evening replay. If you’ve got questions or comments, just reply to this email and I’ll see it.
*** Ian will be gathering your comments during the liveshow and I’ll dive in on them in the last 10-15 minutes of the show. You can drop them in the Substack chat during the show or reply to this email and we’ll see them. ***
Programming note: Tune in to C-SPAN Washington Journal Monday at 9a ET. I’m on with John McArdle talking about the Midterm Elections, the new world of independent journalism and more. Then Tuesday at 2p ET, stop in for a discussion with New York Times best-selling author, veteran journalist and new Substacker
— we’re trading notes on J.D. Vance vs. Mike Pence as Trump’s second-in-command. (Kate authored an excellent book on VPs and their relationships with presidents a few years ago, “First in Line”.)Coming up on today’s show:
The Top: Friday Funday
We’ll take a break from hard politicking every Friday and go for some “lighter fare”, so I figured why not go with the sport that every politician loves to borrow from and involves literal smashing of faces (as opposed to talking trash to Siri and shipping it out to every other sh*tposter.)
I love boxing. The sweet science. Not mixed martial arts (though props to them.)
The sport of underdogs and the streets, hyped by Don King and elegized by Norman Mailer, reminiscent of a hardscrabble American past real and imagined. And, at its core, a showdown, mano a mano, of one fighter versus another, requiring stamina, wits, animal instinct and the ability to take a hit and keep pressing.
If you look over my shoulder on the show, you see Marvelous Marvin Hagler crowding Tommy The Hitman Hearns, who could put down most opponents with a single blow, in their fabled 1985 title fight.
I’m talking Hagler today and, in honor of Labor Day, the ethos of the working man. See you live at Noon!
(Mandatory politics trivia: Teddy Roosevelt’s “Man in the Arena” passage from 1910 is generally used to regal the fighter — in sports, politics, life — who stays in the ring, ignoring the critics and naysayers. But full speech is more about the responsibilities of great public leaders and the citizenry, per the Theodore Roosevelt Association.)
What’s Next
We’re off Monday, Happy Labor Day! Next week, Congress is back in full for the first time since the passage of the Republicans’ “One Big Beautiful Bill”, we’ll have plenty of updates.
