’s dispatch from the Epstein Press Conference at the Capitol yesterday, catch it here. Some very powerful quotes in there from survivors demanding the full release of the Epstein documents. On today’s show:
The Top: What changed?
That was what top podcaster and reality TV star Theo Von in July after the White House declined to release the Epstein Files. He re-posted a clip from his 2024 interview with then-Sen. J.D. Vance in which he said
“Seriously, we need to release the Epstein List, that is an important thing,” Vance said in the clip.
The “seriously” gives the sense this wasn’t trolling or meme-making. But that’s hard to tell in the second term of Donald Trump, in which the deep earnestness from former Vice President Mike Pence, has been replaced with deep online trolling of Vance, representing the modern style of the American conservative movement.
The Nut Graf: Forget the Health Stuff
That was Vance this week ragging on people raising questions of Donald Trump’s health, a little less than a week after Vance seemed to play into the health questions saying he was ready to serve.
Online medical diagnoses aside (H/T Bill Frist) Vance is poised as the de facto frontrunner to succeed Trump as the Republican Party nominee and could easily win the White House in 2028.
So what would a Vance presidency look like? Probably “The New Right”, so to say, blending Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025 with the ideology of Silicon Valley’s neo-monarchist billionaires.
But Vance has a short history in elected politics, and a longer history of high-profile changes in public.
Hot Quote
"Like some others, J.D. Vance may have said some not so great things about me in the past, but he gets it now, and I have seen that in spades," Trump said in 2022 when he endorsed Vance in the Ohio Senate primary, launching his career in office.
Deep Background:
But Vance’s transformation from Never Trump Hollywood Trump-splainer to MAGA True Believer started long before he secured Trump’s endorsement and offers some key insights into the political coalition behind him that would likely guide a possible Vance White House.
It’s America’s hard right, polished up and rebranded for the Trump Era of American politics.
