. Monday through Friday, tune in here on Substack at Noon ET and then catch the replay at 8p ET at Political Voices Network. Each weekday, I’ll bring you along as I report the story. Along with my friend and colleague
, we’ll dive down the late-night, screen-glazed rabbit hole of the modern interwebs, acting as your personal guide to what’s real and what’s complete bullshit. (For our live viewers at noon, reply to this email or send in your comments in the live chat and we’ll get to them at the end of the show.)On today’s show:
The Top: All Rage
Labubus. (Lah-boo-boos).
The first time I heard about this from my kiddo, I was convinced the parent controls on the Netflix were completely f***ed. Now it’s at the top of her list for her birthday and Christmas, and I’m 90 percent cool with it.
They’re furry little monster dolls (for all those who aren’t raising school-aged kids) and apparently fetch some good money among collectors ($170,000 in one instance). College or Labubu? The answer is obvious.
Like all things truly demonic, they present as cute and cuddly and great for the kids. But, as we learned from South Park this week, sacrifice a chicken, drench its fuzzy fur in blood, repeat the incantation and … well, I wouldn’t want to ruin the latest South Park for you.
Pop Satanism aside, these things really are on fire with the kids. Maybe up there with Tickle Me Elmo, Beanie Babies and other generation-defining trends.
Tennis star Naomi Osaka has been rolling out a series of crystal-encrusted Labubus, racket and all, one by one. They clock in at $495 a pop.
Indeed, there is a ritual involved in the unboxing of the Labubu.
So today I’ll be cutting the lights, abducting a fowl, and praying to the Dark Lord (Ozzy) for true cultural wisdom.
Tune in!
