Why would Trump leave the White House? If he continues to follow the authoritarian playbook, he won’t consider departure. And, as you have noted, he may be hiding from the law.
Paul Ryan is coming out too late with too little—just as you thought I would say. The Fox News angle may make his statement more important by context.
Trump must be the worst advertisement for the pro-life movement—everything he does to women provides a rationale for being pro-choice (assault for one). I have real trouble with the pro-life movement because it seems to me it is a paternalistic idea that says women cannot make decisions for themselves. Surely moral culpability or lack thereof ultimately lies with the individual. It bothers me more than I can say that anti-abortion laws punish everyone but the man involved. I never hear about equal punishment. Women don’t bud, there is always a man involved. And the male participant is far less likely to have their world torn apart by an unexpected or unwanted child. No contraception? How many men will think they can avoid the inevitable through wishful thinking? Just saying.
I am bucked up by the karma coming round. Too bad Trump got to pardon many of his key allies. If Trump gets as out of control with fiscal policies and stupid international moves as he says he will do (10% tariffs on all imports and trade progressive taxes for a regressive flat tax instead), the Trump supporters will see the country is really going to go down in flames with a very angry general public. The people will turn on Trump when they are taxed out of existence.
P.S. I am a great fan of Charlie’s work (and his dogs).
