Law enforcement report details incident at rural Virginia bar two weeks before annual CPAC gathering

The chairman of CPAC, Matthew Schlapp, groped a person’s genitals at a bar in rural Virginia earlier this month then drove off in a BMW from the scene, according to a sheriff’s office report obtained by 24sight News.
“Subject assutled (assaulted) one person grabbing their genitals,” the report from the Rappahannock County Sheriff’s Office reads. The Rappahannock News first reported on the sheriff’s report Wednesday.
The sheriff’s report states that the owner of The Black Twig in Sperryville, Virginia, called police shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday, February 8, and said “a patron had just assaulted another customer and was leaving in a silver BMW.”
The sheriff’s office identifies Schlapp as the subject of the complaint in its report.
Independent journalist
first reported last week that Schlapp had assaulted a man on a Saturday night at a bar in rural Virginia. The person who was groped declined to seek a warrant or emergency medical services, according to the sheriff’s report.
The assault allegedly happened roughly two weeks before CPAC started in suburban Washington today.
Schlapp did not a return a text message from 24sight News seeking comment, a message on his voicemail said it was best to text him and his voicemail was full. The owner of The Black Twig, Daniel Gleason, did not return a request for comment Wednesday.
Requests for comment from CPAC’s press office and outside counsel were not immediately returned Thursday. A spokesperson who previously worked with Schlapp when he faced previous accusations of sexual assault said he was not currently working with Schlapp.
Schlapp was accused of sexually assaulting a campaign staffer for then-Georgia Senate candidate Herschel Walker in 2022, growing into a scandal which rocked the long-running conservative organization which started its annual gathering in suburban Washington today. Schlapp eventually settled a civil suit out of court for $480,000 with no legal finding of assault.
