WASHINGTON _ Firebrand GOP Rep. Nancy Mace launched her bid for governor of South Carolina, Monday.
The three-term congresswoman released a video featuring President Donald Trump referring to her as a fighter, with the South Carolina Republican highlighting being the first woman to graduate from The Citadel’s Corps of Cadets, and her push against transgender athletes’ participation in women’s sports while making her bid official.
During a speech at her alma mater, Mace told the crowd: “I’m running for governor because South Carolina doesn’t need another empty suit. It needs a governor who will fight for you and your values. South Carolina needs a governor who will drag the truth into sunlight and flip the tables if that’s what it takes. South Carolina doesn’t need another politician who folds when things get tough, and needs a governor who will always stand tall no matter the odds.”
The Trump-critic-turned-ally has ruffled some feathers among her GOP colleagues, having played a key role in being one of the eight votes to oust former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).
Mace joins South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson, South Carolina Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette and conservative Rep. Ralph Norman in the increasingly crowded field.
She also sparked controversy with a fiery floor speech in February accusing her ex-fiance Patrick Bryant and his associates of sexual misconduct and featured a poster of her naked silhouette during a May 20 hearing where she accused them of filming her without her consent. Bryant and his associates vehemently deny the allegations of misconduct, with Mace currently facing a lawsuit.
During the floor speech, Mace used the time to attack Wilson, her now political opponent, accusing him of failing to prosecute Bryant and his colleagues. Wilson’s office asserted earlier this year that the case had not been referred to them by law enforcement and did not have jurisdiction over the matter.
It is unclear if Trump will endorse in the race.
