Republican Virginia gubernatorial candidate Winsome Earle-Sears’ campaign bus caught on fire on Thursday on its way to a campaign stop.
No one was injured in the blaze, in which the back of the bus was engulfed in flames on Route 33.
The lieutenant governor soon confirmed the incident on X, posting: “While en-route to an event, our campaign bus caught fire. Everyone is safe. Thank you to the first responders who got to the scene quickly — we are so grateful for you.”
Democratic candidate Abigail Spanberger responded on social media, expressing relief no one was harmed.
“I’m grateful to our first responders for their quick action — and I’m thinking of the Lt. Governor and her team after this scary incident,” she posted on X.
The event comes just five days before Virginia’s gubernatorial election, with candidates in the final stretch of hitting the campaign trail.
A new poll released by Roanoke College shows Spanberger with a 10-point lead over Earle-Sears, with 51 percent stating they plan to back Spanberger compared to 41 percent for Earle-Sears and 4 percent remaining undecided. The survey has a weighted margin of error of 4.05%.
