Democrats Rally Around Reining in SCOTUS After Trump Immunity Ruling
‘This ruling, and this session of the court, has been brutally assaultive on Democracy and the rule of law,’ wrote one fed up House leader.
Congressional Democrats in both chambers spitballed ways to act as a check on the “rogue” U.S. Supreme Court after the conservative bloc granted Donald Trump near-total immunity from criminal prosecution for anything deemed an “official” duty.
The momentous 6-3 decision enraged Democratic leaders who’ve seen the high court gut abortion rights, overturn decades of administrative regulation, and shrug off calls to institute any binding ethics rules amidst repeated reports of lavish treatment by GOP donors without any meaningful consequences.
Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who oversaw Trump’s historic back-to-back impeachments and authorized the sweeping investigation into the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, slammed the “rogue” decision as an affront to the American way of life.
“The former president’s claim of total presidential immunity is an insult to the vision of our founders, who declared independence from a King,” the California Democrat wrote online.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said the legislative branch would fight back against the MAGA-aligned justices.
