WASHINGTON _ The federal government is set to shut down just after midnight after Senate Democrats successfully blocked an effort by Senate Republicans to approve a temporary spending measure, Tuesday.
Some lawmakers projected a lengthy government shutdown as parties digging into their respective positions.
“It’s all on the Dems. We aren’t caving. We’re done,” a senior House Republican leadership aide told 24sight News.
Another Republican source floated the possibility of Republicans tacking on provisions that would be difficult for Democrats to vote against onto a clean CR — a strategy moderates have pursued.
However a person close to Speaker Mike Johnson said this is an unlikely option.
“I’m more than happy to talk about it and before they expire, and I think in all likelihood, they need to be reformed. But this is, this is an overreach to try to do this on a permanent basis, particularly on a short term,” Sen. John Cornyn, (R-Texas) told reporters on the push for health care subsidies.
“This is no way to govern — I’m so frustrated by the fact that the House of Representatives isn’t even in this building right now,” Sen. Andy Kim (D-NJ) told 24Sight News.
The House-passed stopgap measure failed on Tuesday in a 55-45 vote, with three senators that caucus with Democrats bucking party lines and voting for the measure.
Both sides of the aisle have cast blame on each other for shutting down the government, with the GOP arguing it is a clean stopgap bill and Democrats are making unreasonable demands. Democrats have asserted that Obamacare subsidies need to be included in the legislation to help prevent an uptick in premiums and slammed Republicans for opting not to include them more during the negotiation process.
President Trump has warned they may eliminate government positions during the course of the shutdown.
“There are people who are there are others out there, I think, who are who don’t want to shut down the government but are being put in a position by their leadership that, should make them ought to make all of them very uncomfortable,” Senate Majority Leader John Thune said of the three defections.
